As veterinarians we are often asked “When is the right time to euthanize my pet?” This is a very difficult question to answer but simply it should be based on the quality of life that pet has. However, this quality is made up of many different aspects in terminally ill or geriatric pets and many are based on the ailment the pet suffers from. Keeping a Pet Hospice Journal, which includes a Quality of Life Scale and a diary, will help pet owners and their veterinarian determine if medical management is needed or when the right time to say goodbye is.
